AUSTIN, TEXAS -- Upper valley leaders are pushing state lawmakers to entice an auto assembly plant to make McAllen its new home.

McAllen mayor Richard Cortez was one of several politicians at the state Capitol Tuesday.

Leaders say the slowdown in the economy is being felt in the valley, but an auto plant could lead to recovery.

Local leaders also pushed projects including a new, higher education campus in the city and improvements to US Highway 281.

"In these two days that we've been here, we've seen a number of cities from the valley coming up and this is great for the Rio Grande Valley," said Edinburg Mayor Joe Ochoa.  "We're making sure that all of us are heard, not only as individuals, but in unison for the valley."

Thursday is "Mission Day" at the Capitol
