A Harlingen police officer allegedly shot a criminal suspect after he lunged at three officers with a kinfe.

The indicent happened under the overpass on the frontage road of U.S. Expressway 77 just north of Harrison Avenue.

Police say the man was lighting a fire in the grassy area under the overpass when three officers asked him to stop.

The man allegedly refused and was uncooperative.

Police said he had his hand in his pocket and when he finally removed it, he displayed a knife.

The man's name was not released but officers claim he lunged at them with the weapon.

That's when one of the three officers allegedly shot at him.

Police will not disclose how many shots were fired at this time but said the suspect was taken to a local hospital.

His condition was not known at Monday night.
