Students and staff at Rio Hondo High School are turning to a makeshift memorial to help them deal with the loss of 16-year-old student.

Yanely Mendoza was killed in a weekend auto accident with a pickup truck off FM 345 between San Benito and Rio Hondo.

Her sister Yamily remains in a coma in a San Antonio hospital.

The girl's family is asking area residents to slow down on the rural Cameron County road.

The case remains under invesetigation but the Speedzapper teamed up with the Rio Hondo Police Department and found motorists speeding, talking on their cell phones and sending text messages.

Donations are being accepted to help with medical expenses for Yamily Mendoza through Compass Bank account under her mother's name Maria Calderon.
