A Rio Grande Valley lawmaker is in the hospital after getting into an auto accident in Austin.

Texas State Rep. Rene Oliveira (D-Brownsville) is recovering following the accident.

Austin Police Department officials told Action 4 News that the wreck happened two blocks away from the Capitol at 10:59 a.m. Thursday.

Investigators said Oliveira was involved in an accident between a red truck and a white sedan at the intersection of Lavaca Street and West 11th Street.

It's not clear who caused the wreck but the accident remains under investigation.

Oliveira's office confirms the Brownsville lawmaker was involved in an accident on his way to the Texas State Capitol.

Paramedics rushed Oliveira to Brackenridge Hospital in Austin.
