Harlingen city leaders are debating how much providing fire department services outside city limits is costing them and if they can afford to continue.

Cameron County pays the Harlingen Fire Department $170,000 dollars a year to put out fires in rural areas just outside Harlingen.

But Harlingen city leaders say the money was not enough to cover costs over the past year, which exceeded $240,000 dollars.

City commissioners met on Wednesday and were supposed to discuss the item but decided to table it.

The issue will be brought up again in two weeks time and the next city commission meeting.

If Harlingen does not provide the services, county leaders say their will turn to fire departments in neighboring communities such as San Benito or La Feria.
