A man who allegedly shot a Matamoros police officer and put the UTB campus on alert during his escape is finally behind bars.

The En Linea Directa website reported that Matamoros police arrested Miguel Angel Arellano-Martinez around 7:40 p.m. Monday.

The website reported that the 31-year-old man known as “El Pony” or “El Pelon” is accused in a July 23 robbery in downtown Matamoros.

Arrellano-Martinez allegedly shot police officer Javier Mendoza-Soto while trying to flee.

The 28-year-old police officer remains paralyzed after a bullet became lodged in his spine.

Arrellano-Martinez fled across the Rio Grande and into the United States putting the University of Texas at Brownsville campus on a security alert.

Authorities never found Arrellano-Martinez but En Linea Directa reported that authorities were able to track him down on Monday.

En Linea Directa reported that Arrellano-Martinez was armed at the time of his arrest.

The Matamoros man remains behind bars where he is expected to face numerous charges.
