A Haitian immigrant may have put a face to ongoing rumors about a hunger strike among illegal immigrants at the Port Isabel Detention Center.

Immigration officials filed a federal lawsuit to force feed inmate Kenson Lima.

Court records show the 26-year-old immigrant was rushed to the Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen over the weekend.

U.S. District Court Judge Hilda Tagle in Brownsville sided with immigration officials and ordered that Lima be given medical care and fed intravenously to save his life.

Lima is now back at the immigration center infirmary but records show he started his hunger strike on June 23rd.

The Haitian immigrant collapsed a few days later while taking a shower at the Bayview-area facility.

A motive for the hunger strike is not listed but immigration officials said in court records that he refused food, water and medical attention.

Court records show doctors determined Lima does not suffer from any mental illness but during one incident, Lima refused to even let doctors take his pulse or take blood samples.

Immigration officials reacted by asking the Judge Tagle to intervene and give him the authority to save his life even if it was against his will.

Action 4 news looked into the Haitian immigrant's background and learned arrived in the United States legally in 2003.

But Lima was ordered for deportation after being arrested for domestic violence case in Florida.

The Haitian immigrant is fighting the deportation and has a scheduled hearing on the case on Monday.

Action 4 News has received numerous calls from relatives of inmates at the immigration facility.

They are concerned about the hunger strike and an alleged outbreak of swine flu at the Port Isabel facility.

Activists also took to the streets in McAllen on Wednesday to draw attention to the issue.

Action 4 News put in a call to U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials but they said they cannot comment on the case.

Lima’s attorney Jodie Goodwin told Action 4 News that  cannot comment on the case until after a hearing before Judge Tagle on Monday afternoon.

Deportation IS the answer.

There is a reason that illegal aliens are called ILLEGAL aliens. They have broken the law. They have tried to go around the current immigration laws. For whatever reason they feel they are more entitled to special treatment then the immigrants that abide by the laws and migrate to this country legally. Domestic violence is a felony and as such bars this individual from immigrating to the US. He should be deported along with every other illegal immigrant. ICE needs to step up and start deporting more illegals instead of waiting until they are forced through bad publicity to do so... If ICE or local authorities need ideas on how to raise the number of illegals deported, just check the county run hospitals. Perfect plan... when a person comes in for treatment. Ask for proof of status. If proof cannot be provided, treat the person and then usher them out the back door and onto a bus headed for an ICE facility. Quick, easy, and their basic rights protected.

Maybe some of you all should just pick up a damn law book preferably the INA and read it! People make it seem like the agents or judges make the rules and set the punishments, but in reality its in fine print. So stop complaning about his punishment he only brought it upon himself. As for the "hunger strike" i could care less.

Deportation is NOT the solution! Lima should stay. That is his point !!

A hardcore criminal? Since when is family violence a hardcore crime. The option of Prison time is much better than being deported. Imagine NEVER and I mean NEVER coming back. I'm not saying hitting a women is okay, but deportation is extreme punishment. Why not deport the true Hardcore criminals. The murderers & rapists. Everyone forgets this country is full of immigrants, that migrated from other countries. That's why are land is full of an array of nationalities. So why are we paying so much attention on illegal immigrants. All they want is to come to the U.S for a better life and along the way some mess up. No one is perfect. But why be so harsh. I feel the Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act should be revised. It hasn't been touched since 1996, when Clinton was in office. Way before 9/11. Lima should be punished, don't get me wrong but deportation isn't the solution.

He came to your great land for a better life and breaks the law and you bleeding hearts say oh poor him.Mr. Lima. be a man take resposibility for your actions you broke the law now deal with it.

Judge orders force feeding of an illegal who just happens to be a criminal

Posted by US born Citizen, USA - Sunday, July 05, 2009 at 10:52 a.m.

Why do criminals have more rights than non-criminals? They get health care and legal assistance all at the cost of American citizens, not to mention 3 hots and a cot. That is more than most Americans receive from their own government. The sooner he starves, the more tax money that will be freed up for the next illegal criminal to use.

wow.. some of the comments here make me think

you people are sick individuals.. saying let him starve wow.. i dont ever wish bad on anyone.. but when someone you know is being held inhumanley and is hunger striking to get a point accrosss.. i hope u can still say "let them starve" .. unbelievable .. let got not have mercy on your souls in your time of redemption

unfair treatment

Posted by patrick dempsey, minnesota - Sunday, July 05, 2009 at 12:57 a.m.

I think a lot of you are missing the point that he is not illegal... Build up a wall to keep him out? Really? He's being deported because he got in trouble for domestic violence. Domestic violence is not a crime only subjected to minorities contrary to popular belief judging by the previous comments. Two stories down a cop is being charged with domestic violence.. hmm.. I don't see too many comments about building giant walls to keep him out of our country. Use your heads, people.

I Guess He'll Think Twice About Abusing Women

Posted by tamara ferris, los angeles - Sunday, July 05, 2009 at 12:54 a.m.

No where in the article does it say that he is a hardened criminal, however for beating a woman, he should get sent back. I have no sympathy for men who beat on women.

Railcars and barges

Posted by Rob Martin, Florida US - Sunday, July 05, 2009 at 12:14 a.m.

The US customs and Immigration services need to get railcars for the Mexicans, Guatemalans and other South American illegals and railroad them back South of our border, do not pass go, do not collect $200 dollars.
The Barges are to be used to tow back the illegal Haitians, Cubans and Dominican Republic illegals back to their respective country.
We need to give this particular illegal a choice GO BACK HOME or STAY IN JAIL, cut & dry.

send them all back

Hunger Strike

Posted by El Vato Verde, McAllen - Friday, July 03, 2009 at 10:59 a.m.

When Kenson Lima gets deported back to Haiti he should go on a hunger strike there in Haiti to see if he gets any attention from his government and let them take care of him.

Don't blame our Great Country "The United State of America" for someone else's problems. Let's take care of our own first.

GOD BLESS AMERICA

Happy 4th of July

Judge TAGLE and DHS/ICE are HARDCORE CRIMINALS

Posted by susana delValle, el valle - Thursday, July 02, 2009 at 11:32 p.m.

Do you know what a hard core crime is? Systematically violating fundamental Human Rights protected by the constitution and international law. that is a HARDCORE CRIMINAL. They should be tried and convicted for crimes against humanity and exiled from the U.S.

Haitian forced fed

Posted by D. Lopez, Harlingen - Thursday, July 02, 2009 at 10:10 p.m.

This is such BS! working at this place goes to show me that people do take advantage of the U.S. gov but these people that do this are not even people that are not even from the U.S. These guys are hard core criminals and they have no regrets on the bad things they have done. Alot of you readers don't even know half of the things that go on behind those walls how they take advantage of medical and detention officers. So don't judge people by what you hear from the media until you have worked in a place like PIDC. Some of these detainees go on strike for the most craziest reasons like to watch the basketball playoffs. These people have more rights then the people that work there!!!

Hunger Strike for HUMAN RIGHTS!!!

Posted by susana delValle, el valle - Thursday, July 02, 2009 at 9:48 p.m.

Johnson as well as Judge Tagle, Johnny Luna, Michael Watkins, Dora Schriro, Nina Pruneda, Janet Napolitano and all the Congressmen and Senators of the Valley know why this Kenson Lima is refusing food... this is a HUNGER STRIKE people!!!! That is what happens when you have no other means by which to defend your rights or bring attention to the abuse of your humanity. There are ten or more immigrants on Hunger Strike at the Port Isabel Detention Center. It was on the news just yesterday. I pray that Kenson Lima's sacrifice is recognized this time around by the press, political officials and everyone of good conscience. Judge Tagle is setting back Human Rights struggle into the dark ages. Would she have force fed CEASAR CHAVEZ OR GHANDI? She and all who deny a Human their right to protest to defend their rights should be ashamed of themselves!

Tough Love...

Force feeding? Come on. If he wants to starve, let him. I see so much protection of immigrants, and illegals, and criminals. Why not do this for our own? Stop wasting tax payer money.

NOW THE JUSTICE SYSTEM CARES?

Posted by L. Sanchez, Harlingen - Thursday, July 02, 2009 at 7:11 p.m.

NOW! justice system careSabout inmates at the Port Isabel Detention Center? Most inmates get deported anyway. They throw them out like trash. I had a close friend of mine that was in the Port Isabel Detention Center and he always complained of the bad conditions and mistreatment of inmates. Human beings being treated like animals. I think this Haitian man is trying to make a point. He probably misses his family or is depressed about the future of his case. Now resident aliens are being deported for the most minor offenses. I don't think it's fair! The U.S throws you out of this country, many times the only country they know. To a country they know nothing about just that they were born there. Will they care about him when he gets deported and is roaming the streets hungry, because he does not have anywhere to go or anyone he knows. I will pray for this young man. I hope he gets to stay. No one knows how it is, until you have gone through it yourself or someone close to you does.
