Low chlorine levels have prompted state officials to issue a 'boil water' notice for 12 Brownsville neighborhoods.

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) asked the El Jardin Water Supply Corporation to issue the notice on Tuesday.

TCEQ officials made the request due to low levels of chlorine in the water company's system.

Chlorine is used to kill bacteria and other harmful microbes in drinking water.

The affected areas are as follows:

• Florida Road between South Browne and South Oklahoma
• South Browne Road between Florida Road and Southmost Road
• South Oklahoma Road between Florida Road and Southmost Road
• Alaska Road between South Browne Road and South Oklahoma Road
• Valle Escondo, Gruta and Rincon
• Vallce Hermoso
• Southmost Road between Paloma Blanca and South Oklahoma Road
• George Saenz Road
• Las Palomas Road
• Southpoint Road
• Dockberry Road between South Indiana and South Dakota Road
• Paloma Blanca between Maverick Road and Southmost Road

Residents in those areas are asked to boil their water before using it to drinking, cooking or ice making.

El Jardin Water Supply Corporation officials told Action 4 News that they would notify the public when the water is safe again.
