BROWNSVILLE -- The wing-toting staff in Brownsville is no more.

Tuesday, Hooters permanently shut down and laying off more than three dozen employees.

Former employee Manny Rodriguez told Action 4 News that he got the bad news on Tuesday morning.

"We just got the news today....early in the morning... that we just lost business and we are not going to work at Hooters no more," Rodriguez said. "There's going to be no more Hooters at Brownsville so that's something really sad"

Action 4 News contacted Hooters for comment and learned the Brownsville location is owned by franchisee Texas Wings, Inc. out of Dallas.

Company Vice President Mike Herrick issued a statement about the closure.

"They will be closing their Brownsville location effective immediately," he said in the statemetn. "The closing is the result of poor sales. The closing will affect 35 employees who were all given severance packages."

Brownsville resident Chris Martinez said he lives next door to the restaurant at the Borders Apartments.

“It's a big lost to the city of Brownsville and it just goes to show you that the dangers that our economy is facing now," Martinez said. "Hopefully our new president will be able to get us out of this deficit.”

We spotted a moving crew with U-hauls taking out tables and chairs clearing out the restaurant.

Rodriguez said he remains optimistic despite being laid off.

"We weren't making enough sales so that's why we lost our jobs, but it's all good, you know. We are all looking towards the future trying to do better things for us," he said.

Not Everyone Does Bad

The Chicken Run Restaurant is still going strong (with two locations if you can believe that). It seems that the power of the TACO CARTEL is strong around these parts.

Hooters 4x4 show has been moved....

Posted by Jose Mejia, Houston - Wednesday, February 04, 2009 at 11:20 a.m.

It is very unfortunate for Hooters and the employees laid off. It doesn't feel good to get laid off.
We at www.txttora.com were going to host an open charity event for all 4X4s but we are forced to move it to offer the entertainment we promised.
The 4x4 event that was to take place in Hooters has been moved to Winks. http://www.winkssaloon.com/ Winks management was kind enough to accept our proposal on a very short noticed.
Hooters Corporate Directors were kind enough to keep their commitment towards the event and make their contribution towards a great cause.
This event is to spread awareness of a noble 4x4 cause. Read more about it here. www.wheelersforthe wounded.com Also see link: http://www.tacomaterritory.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1482105&postcount=1

Mr. Owl

MEMORIES. I will always have fond memories of this place. The food was terrible and cold, and sometimes burned. Oh, and a burger would set u back about 22 bucks. But there were good times.

loss?

Sorry...I don't see the closing of a business that has women running around in orange gym shorts with their female anatomy cleverly disguised as huge owl eyes as 'sad'....

Sad....

What is Brownsville coming to? Every business that opens up suddenly shuts down. I wonder why this franchise of restaurant didnt get a bail out from the goverment just like other companies did? Maybe I should move away from here,, its depressing, boring and no life. The only thing I keep hearing on the news is bad stuff about brownsville.
