Mexican media outlets are reporting that former New York Jets cornerback Kwame Ellis has been arrested in Reynosa.
Metro Noticias of Tamaulipas reported that Ellis got into an argument with a taxi driver who allegedly drove the former NFL player to the city's red light district known locally as "Boy's Town."
The taxi driver reportedly told police that drove Ellis around the Mexican border city for several hours but the former football player stiffed him when it came time to pay.
The 320 peso or $26 dollar cab ride reportedly started late Sunday night and went through early Monday morning.
Reynosa city police arrested Ellis for theft of service and a Mexican judge ordered that the 34-year-old be held in a Reynosa jail for 36 hours.
Metro Noticias of Tamaulipas reported that Ellis claims to have paid the taxi bill but the cab driver insists he did not and brought him directly to police.
According to the New York Jets website, Ellis played for Stanford in college and started with the Jets in 1996. He left the team and the NFL in 1998.
It was not clear why or how long Ellis had been visiting the area.
