HARLINGEN --  Action 4 News found the seats are full at In His Presence ministries, many in attendance are young people touched by God.  Joshua Gonzalez, a former gang member, is one of them.

"I've already lost friends, he's in Olmito, he's the one that shot a west sider," he said.

He says he left his lifestyle to turn to God a month ago.

He thanks J.O. Menindez for turning him to God.

"My goal is to reach out to gangs and youth that are hurting," Menindez said.

"He's helped us reach God and see who he is and gang members who've changed," Gonzalez explained.

In just a month, the youth group is now 40 members strong, they even have a myspace account (myspace.com/ihpministries) showing gang members who turned to God.

One of their newest members is Henry Cruz, another reformed gang member.

"I let go of my past, I’m looking to my future and God's going to be there, and I'm going thorough his path," he explained.

The group says they've got big plans ahead and with these former gang member's ties to their past, they hope to change the future.

"He wants to reach out to these west siders,” Gonzalez said, “and I believe I can I know most of them here."

Jo says his success so far is helping bring in even more gang members.

"They say the best marketing is word of mouth.  It spread through North High School," he explained.

Now the teens have plans to spread the word and success through the entire city.

"There's going to be less crime in Harlingen, less graffiti, gangs, everything."

The boys tell us they try interesting tactics to get gang members in the church one of them bets his friends money that they'll feel a change by attending service.

So far he not paid out any of them.  For more information on the ministry, you can call J.O. Menindez at (956) 456-4562.

I used to be involved in soldiers for Christ!

Posted by Myspace.com/MusikforGod Gutierrez, Harlingen tx. - Monday, December 14, 2009 at 11:17 a.m.

This little scam died off! Why? I used to be in Soldiers for Christ, But it was unbiblical, This whole thing was run by emotion and not by God the Father. Everyone talked about eachother and still lived in sin, because they were never truly saved. Salvation is given by Grace trough our Faith which is a gift of God so that no one may bost about it. The man Jo menindez was full of pride and how he had brought salvation to many youth. I was there every wednesday and sunday and All he ever did was lay hands on these youth telling them there problems only so they would emotionally break down. God was not there. He decieved these Kids because they all went back to gangs, I still Go to school with them. and they all went back to gangs. If they were ever truly saved they would of continued in the Lord. Because that who began a Good work in him will finish it! It was a waste of time and many of these youth returned to their Gangs, Hating God.

God makes all things NEw

To the person who wrote, "I believe people use religion as a crutch in life to make them feel like there is somebody taking care of them....ignorance is bliss" Well you got some truth in that statement, but if your going to say it then say it right. Its not people using religion as a crutch it is People Using JESUS as our crutch. We dont do it to make it feel like we have someone taking care of us, we Fall on Jesus because he there to catch us. And the fact tht we fall On Jesus just proves your ignorance because we can admit tht we cant do it all on our own and we can admit there is someone above us to call upon.

To the person who wrote,"I pray that the police get off their buts and do something other than waste our tax payers money. prayer is gonna get you nowhere fast. but hey if god dosent do anything about it then why should we right." You said I pray....then in the same paragraph you wrote prayer is gonna get you no where fast. So look where that just got you. To say that prayer is going to get you nowhere fast is not true, just reading this news report just shows you the power of Prayer and the power of God! I mean these teenagers and Young adults have been in these gangs and have caused and felt so much hurt in their and others lives and To see a complete turn around. How else could that have happened? What reason is big enough to change someone's life completely, God was there, He is there, and He will be there. Thank God for all that he has done and will continue to do! Thank You Lord in the Name of Jesus!

Whatever it takes

you know I am not from HArlingen but its hard to have to listen to the news and watch everything that is going on. Its sad to know that some are dying for no reason. Im not a very dedicated church member but I do attend, and i think that if this is the way out of the gangs for these kids well then let it be. its better to hear about things like this to be going on then to hear that someone else was killed. hey WHATEVER IT TAKES TO BETTER THE SITUATION!!!!!!!!!!!!! and to those that post negative comments... its because of people that think like you why we have these negative behaviors.

A Hunger for God.

For all you naysayers

This is awesome, because its not about being good or bad its about being alive or dead, and these kids are alive now. For all you naysayers why dont you look up some statistics on programs like Prison Ministries instead of being ignorant to the fact that these programs DO work. They not only work permanantly, but eternally...

Great Idea - Thanks for the article!

Thanks so much for reporting on this. It's great that a police chief is leading the way to offer true salvation to gang members who might never have known the love of God otherwise. It's great to give these kids love and to show them a family they can be involved in that is not tied to violence and hate. Great going J.O. Menindez. Keep praying and reaching out! It certainly beats having to throw the kids into jail.

Awesome

This is great news! It's about time. Jesus needs to introduced to everyone! It's amazing how even a gang members life can be changed. That Police Chief has wisdom, God given wisdom. - way to go Tio.

On the right Path

It's beautiful to see that there is hope for these young people. That is what they need to see, hope at the end of the wrong path. Even if they choose not to use it right away.

Way to Go!!

I think that this is a tremendous idea! How else are we going to get Harlingen clean, or the whole world for that fact, without Jesus Christ. I commend you all for doing this, and especially these teens who give their lives to the Lord and give up their old ways. Good job kids, your reward awaits :)

"God"......where?who?Why?

Posted by manuel delgado, mission - Monday, September 29, 2008 at 12:08 p.m.

ok...i seriously have a problem with this... you telling me that these kids need "God" to do good. That's sad. It's like someone going to jail and becoming born-again. Were these kids religious at first,so why weren't they good before that. I believe people use religion as a crutch in life to make them feel like there is somebody taking care of them...Ignorance is bliss.
