Six companies have placed bids for UTB's border fence.
Upgrades to the border fence on the University of Texas at Brownsville-Texas Southmost College campus could get underway soon.
Six construction companies from Texas and Louisiana have submitted bids for the construction project.
Contractors hopes to raise the fence to a standard height of 10 feet and extend its coverage to 4,500 feet around the south end of the campus.
An existing fence located on campus property will be enhanced and eventually outfitted with surveillance technology by U.S. Customs and Border Patrol.
UTB project coordinator Wayne Moore told Action 4 News that a committee of school administrators is evaluating the proposals based on qualifications, price and estimated delivery schedule.
After a contract is executed, the chosen company will have until the end of this year to complete the enhancements.
The university, which is solely responsible for choosing a contractor, must sign an agreement by Oct. 1.
The plan for the fence enhancement was the result of a nearly year-long legal battle between UTB and the u.S. Department of Homeland Security.
