Failing to pay county taxes cost 22 families their homes.

Bidders gathered outside the Cameron County Courthouse in Brownsville on Tuesday.

Many walked away with great deals.

The homes were auctioned off as a way to help the county recover those unpaid property taxes.

Attorney Jeffrey M. Garcia said the owners were notified that if they did not pay, they would lose their homes.

"This is the final, the last step of the road, even after this point the taxpayer still has a right of redemption to be able to get their property back," Garcia said.

Anyone hoping to get their home back needs to purchase their house at the price the bidder paid plus an additional 25 percent.
