A McAllen assistant principal was charged with running an illegal poker den out of his Mission home.

An attorney representing Jose Luis Esquivel told Action 4 News that his client is a good man.

He claims that his client hosted a party that just got out of hand.

Mission police raided Esquivel's home on the 900 block of Keystone Street over the weekend.

Investigators found 40 to 50 inside as well as gaming tables, cards, chips, $4,000 in cash and a small amount of cocaine.

"I'm sure that that there's a lot of people right now turning to their friends questioning saying oh my god, we played the same deal...."

Esquivel was released after posting a $7,500 bond.

He now awaits a court date to answer a promotion of gambling charge.

If anyone else is wondering what Mr. Esquivel is being charged with, simply call the arresting agency or sheriff's office and ask what the suspect was charged with. It is public record and can easily be obtained. By the way, should it really matter if channel 4 news is the only reporting news agency that has mentioned the cocaine being found at Mr. Esquivel's residence. If it was there and he was charged with it what difference does it really make?

Assistant principal faces gambling charges

I JUST HAVE SOMETHING TO ASK!! WHY IS IT THAT ONLY ON CHANNEL 4 NEWS IT APPEARS AS "NOT ONLY GAMBLING BUT WITH COCAINE"? I THINK THERE WAS NO COCAINE AT HIS PLACE. HE IS A GOOD ROLE MODEL AND I DOUBT THAT THEY HAVE PROVE OF HIM KEEPING MONEY OUT OF THE GAMES!!

Disappointed...

Is it any wonder why there is so much crime and official abuse of power in the valley. It never ceases to amaze me just how much some people here are willing to look the other way at the big picture and micro-manage the little things. This asst. principal is caught with an ILLEGAL gambling enterprise in HIS home along with cocaine which, anywhere else in the U.S. except for the valley, is also ILLEGAL and so many choose to defend this man's character as an upright and outstanding citizen and positive role model. With his own children in the house this suspect (not convicted YET) elected to continue to pursue a life of illegal activity. After all, one has to obtain a search warrant based on probable cause and convince a judge that there is reason enough to search said property or person. So the entire defense of "a party that got out of hand" just doesn't fly. Apparently this had been going on for awhile. Second, is that really a defense to prosecution at all. If it were a bank hold up, would the suspect be justified by saying it was bank transaction that got out of hand? Yet so many people in the valley attempt to shift the blame somewhere else whenever something like this goes down. How many bloggers have posted that it's all being blown oout of proportion and that if everyone else is doing it, it shouldn't be such a big deal. If it's ILLEGAL then it's against the laws of this country, state, county & city. It's that mentality that keeps the valley in the lawless state that it currently resides in. What's worse is every major crime which has occurred in the valley recently (teacher murdered in his own home, police officer shot by a suspect with extensive criminal background, etc.) you'll see people blogging their opinions of how the suspected individuals were either ill treated by their victims or somehow provoked to committing the crime. No one is willing to take or accept responsibility. The people of the valley need to take a long hard look at reality and realize that with this insane mentality, it's only going to get worse before it will ever get better.

Get over it

Posted by All In, McAllen - Wednesday, July 02, 2008 at 10:50 a.m.

It really tends to upset me everytime a McAllen School District employee gets into trouble Mrs. Yolanda Chapa's name is always thrown out to the public by either disgruntled or vendective persons. My advise is get over it and let Mrs. Chapa do her job. As far as the buildings being closed I guess whomever the person is that is bad mouthing MISD does not believe in vacation, which is well deserved to a staff of hard workers. This Principal should be held accountable for his own actions and not anyone else. I feel it is a cheap shot for anyone to try to pass the buck off onto someone who had not the slightest thing to do with this incident.

A good man

This story about Mr. Esquivel has been taken way out of proportion I know this man very well and I know that he meant no harm to anyone especially to his kids he is a good father and very good with kids. He has also been a coach for a very long time, ok he made a mistake or probably took it a bit too far with this poker game but guess what I know many police officers who sell and buy pot numbers during football season and that does not make them a bad person this man has also taught in Edinburg and believe me he was well respected by students and his co-wokers,nobody is perfect but ofcourse when you work around kids everyone wants you to be perfect there are many teachers and principles out there that have done far worse and you know who you are they just didnt get caught. I would love for mr Esquivel to come back to Edinburg and be a principal where my kids go to school because I know the type of principal he is and they would be in excellent hands

Double Standard in Texas

Posted by Jeff Gonzalez, La Feria - Tuesday, July 01, 2008 at 9:36 p.m.

While I do not condone this person's actions regarding gambling, I have to laugh at the double standard that exists among people down here.
It's OK to buy "numbers" for football games from your compadre, right??
It's OK to go to the dog track and bet money on the races, right??
It's OK to buy lottery tickets with no maximum amount restriction, right??
Texas law, their cronies and a bunch of hypocrites out here in the Rio Grande Valley(yes, I am talking about the common folk)are acting outraged over this matter.
Double standards exists out here, much more than the infamous chupacabra or the Jesus/Virgin Mary image burned into a tortilla.
The incident happened on private property, not school zone.
The charges against the suspect HAVE to be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
Everyone that is Mexican-american and lives down here knows someone who gambles, legally or illegally or does it themselves.
If Hidalgo County law enforcement can turn a blind eye to crime scene investigator employees who drink while "on-call", then surely this incident can be resolved without much trouble.

What a Great Role Model...........

Posted by Kelly Garza, McAllen - Tuesday, July 01, 2008 at 6:24 p.m.

This person was respected by children and his peers in his work place. A person that should be a role model to these children. We tell the children "Just Say No" to drugs and this is what this man is doing in his home. Having drugs in his home is just as bad as having the drugs in his pocket. This man has lost everything for not using his head as he should've. His reputation has been tarnished and his career don't even go there. Every Schools should do a good background check regularly and drug testing to every one that has contact with children in school.

PokerPlayer

If you have ever played at a poker tournament, you will find many politicians, people working for school districts, even law enforcement participating. Keep in mind that unless the house is actually taking money, participating in poker games is much like going to the bingo. It is totally legal. Therefore, until it is actually proven money was taken, it really does not matter who was there. I am not discounting the seriousness of the situation but get the facts first before you point fingers or call people names (misspelled none the less).

Ask Yolanda

Posted by In the Know, McAllen - Tuesday, July 01, 2008 at 3:27 p.m.

Somebody should ask Yolanda Chapa, the so-called MISD superintendent, if she was or has ever gambled at this or any other gambling house here in the Valley. And why is the district office closed? These are public buildings that should be open to the public. There is NOBODY to answer a phone at any of the tax-payer funded buildings. McAllen ISD is a joke.

I am sure many will find what Mr. Esquivel has been doing a total outrage, but it is more common that one would think. Every night of the week a dedicated player can find a game somewhere in the valley. Most are set up as tournament play and the house does not make any money. I am curious to see what proof is generated against Mr. Esquivel showing he actually took money. With 40 or 50 people, that is just too many to actually be a cash game. Poker players just want to play. The internet is available but live play is just alot more fun.
