Residents of the Las Cañas colonia outside Alton said they do not qualify for assistance to rebuild their homes destroyed in a recent storm.

Dozens of mobile homes were destroyed in the rural Hidalgo County community earlier this month.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry sent employees from the Small Business Administration to provide assistance to homeowners.

But Ann Cass with Proyecto Azteca told Action 4 News that residents do not qualify for the assistance.

She said the colonia residents must make $40,000 and have a high credit score to qualify.

Cass criticized Perry but said her group will try to help the colonia residents build proper homes.

What is a Colonio

These colonio's should be outlawed. They should be dissasembled by the county. The people who live there are mostly illegals or people who do not want to pay for anything, but want everything for free. None of them speak English a big hint they are illegals. They want street lights, fire hydrants, sewage, etc. They are not entitled to any such services. If they want them, they must pay to install them properly, using liscensed electricians, plumbers, etc., like the rest of us have too. When you live in rural America, you pay to have telephone poles raised, sewage installed, phone lines run, etc. Instead they choose not too. They do not pay taxes like we do in the city, they create slums and impact our environment with all the garbage and hazardous materials they leave lying around on their property. I have seen it with my own eyes. Just because you are poor does not mean you have to be dirty. I was raised poor along with five brothers and sisters. Our parents never allowed our yard or house to be filthy or littered with trash. If these people were in Mexico they would be in the same boat, but with paddles as their true government just might help them, but alas they are here illegally on American soil crying foul. Not even the world's tiniest violin can play cry me a river for their woes. What I found most comical, was how the reporter herself acted surprised by the very news she was reporting. Classic.

Flimsy

A friend of mine lives in a mobile home near where this occured. Nothing at all happened to them or their home despite the strong winds. Why? Simple, their home was properly tied down with skirting. These homes were not. You cannot get hooked up to utilities inside McAllen city limits without proper tie downs and skirting. Penny wise, pound foolish.

Las Canas

I'm just curious about these people in the Colonias. From what people tell me in the area, some of these people are illegals. Is that why they didn't qualify? Or is it both the $40,000 minimum and they don't have SS cards.? Ms Cass makes it sound likes it Gov Perrys fault, is it really? I'm sure our government would take care of its own, which situation are we led to believe?
