Sunrise on South Padre soothes the soul. At first light, there is only a telltale pinkish glow on the distant horizon. Slowly the glowing orb appears to rise from the vast waters of the Gulf. For a moment, it hovers just above the water, its reflection lingering on the surface.

The menacing rattle of a big diamondback cuts thru the early morning calm. The tell tale buzz sends a potent warning not to approach the coiled serpent. Perhaps it would be best to leave this end of the pond to the sunning rattler.

White-winged doves are exceptionally beautiful birds. Their soft gray feathering is accented by a distinctive swath of white in the wing, but it is the shimmering iridescence just behind the neck and the brilliant blue around the eye that really sets them off. And of course, they are very tasty table fare.
