MEXICO CITY (AP) -- Authorities say the police chief of the Mexican border city of Nuevo Laredo is missing.

Tamaulipas state prosecutors say they have opened an investigation into the whereabouts of Roberto Balmori Garza, police chief of the city across the border from Laredo, Texas.

Tamaulipas prosecutors said in a statement Monday that state officials in Nuevo Laredo will be in charge of the investigation.

Local media reported that two of Balmori Garza's brothers were found shot dead Sunday inside the trunk of a car in the neighboring state of Nuevo Leon.

Tamaulipas prosecutors' spokesman Ruben Dario said Balmori Garza disappeared over the weekend. He said he couldn't give any other information on the case.

CD. VICTORIA, Tamaulipas.- La Procuraduría General de Justicia del Estado, a través de personal adscrito a la delegación de esta institución en la ciudad de Nuevo Laredo, inició indagatoria relacionada con la ausencia del ciudadano Roberto Alejandro Balmori Garza, quien funge como encargado de la Dirección de Seguridad Pública Municipal.

En los últimos días se vienen manejando diversas hipótesis sobre el desconocimiento de la ubicación de Balmori Garza, por lo que esta Procuraduría instruyó al delegado en Nuevo Laredo para que gire oficios correspondientes a las instancias respectivas que permitan establecer el acopio de información que conduzca a determinar el paradero del funcionario municipal.
