Deputies with the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office are investigating a car accident involving 12 people near Lake Edinburg.

According to authorities, a Ford Expedition slid into the water Saturday afternoon.

As the vehicle seeped into the mud, the passengers and driver were trapped inside the car until Edinburg fire fighters arrived.

ATV’s and 4-wheel drive vehicles were used to help get the people out of the car.

By the time they were able to get out of the car, it took fire fighters an extra half-mile to drive the passengers to an ambulance.

A girl was transported to  a nearby hospital for possible broken bones.

Officials said speed was not involved in the accident, but that the muddy conditions near the lake may have played a factor.

The Expedition was traveling on a dirt road near Seminary Road on private property.
