Carter Mink is a Harlingen teenager, who climbs into a van every Sunday with his buddies.

Like clowns in a clown car there are five boys, a bass cello, a tuba, two trombones, and pair of drum sticks, and the group makes the trek to Edinburg.

Carter just happens to be the best bass cellist in the state of Texas; he officially took the title a few weeks ago.

But here with the South Texas Youth Symphony, Carter is just one of many talented teenagers.

There are about 50 musicians from around the Rio Grande Valley that comprise this dedicated group.

Each week the kids come together for two and a half hours to practice their craft. There are violinists, percussionists, a brass section and more—who simply enjoy making music come alive.

The Youth Symphony is under the direction of conductor Lucas Darger.

Darger is an orchestra teacher at a Coakley Middle School in Harlingen as well—and enjoys teaching young people the beauty of music.

Andrew Kim is Concert Master, and a talented violinist.

No X Box or lazy Sunday afternoons for Carter and his bunch. Instead there is a camaraderie built on the harmony of music, time with friends, and a particularly great performance.

The South Texas Youth Symphony will be performing its Christmas concert on December 16, 2012, at 4:00 in the afternoon at the Edinburg Municipal Auditorium. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children.
