A 29-year-old woman died Saturday after her car crashed into an embankment of a San Benito canal.

It happened at the intersection of South Frontage and Sherer Road around 3:20 p.m.

San Benito Police and Fire Department responded to a call about a vehicle on fire.

When officials arrived to the scene, they saw a 2012 Nissan 4 door engulfed in flames.

They said that the car was traveling eastbound on South Frontage Road when the driver ran a red light.

The car then drove through a grassy area, went airborne and landed on the east side embankment of a canal.

The 29-year-old was the only person in the car.

She suffered fatal head trauma and severe burns to her body.

Her name is not being released at this time, and the accident is currently under investigation.
