Fire crews from all over Cameron County extinguished the chemical fire burning east of Rio Hondo on Saturday.

Humberto Barrera, the emergency manager for Cameron County, said crews wrapped up just before the arrival of a cold front to the Rio Grande Valley.

The fire started Friday at about noon when a warehouse full of buckets and cans of paint caught fire near FM 106 and FM 803.

The toxic fumes forced county authorities to close those roads, to avoid having residents come in contact with the smoke.

By Saturday morning, crews from Brownsville, San Benito, Harlingen and Rio Hondo had put out the flames and smoke, while working to extinguish hot spots.

Barrera said fire crews finished by Saturday afternoon, as the heavy rain from the cold front made its way through.

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality is looking into the fire.

All roads closed because of the fire have since been reopened.
