It’s a proposal being considered by Brownsville Independent School District officials but it’s not sitting well with parents of students at Veterans Memorial High School.
The parents are challenging a proposal that could turn the campus of Brownsville’s newest high school into a magnet school.
A group of parents is asking Brownsville school board members to leave the school as is.
They told Action 4 News that Veterans Memorial High School was built to alleviate overcrowding and not to house a career-oriented campus.
They fear this change could affect the school’s athletic programs and winning records.
Jesus Guzman, whose son attends the school, said the district has provided them with little information on the proposed changes leaving them in a panic.
Guzman said students have found a disciplined, and respectful niche with their peers, teachers and coaches.
He and other parents fear if the campus is changed, it could mean the end of athletics and the relocation of their children.
"There's nothing broken,” Guzman said. “I don’t believe we need to fix anything. They should think about the decisions they make because the people that are going to end up losing with what they decide are our kids not them"
Brownsville ISD spokeswoman Drue Brown said one proposal is to relocate the engineering program from Porter High School and the medical program from Hanna High School to Veterans.
Another option is to turn the entire Veterans Memorial High School campus into a magnet school.
Brown said that no decisions have been made.
And informative meeting is being held at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Brownsville ISD headquarters off Price Road to discuss the proposals with parents.
Brown told Action 4 News that hundreds of students are turned away from these magnet programs because of the limited space and resources available every year.
If the magnet program is approved, she said more students would benefit.
