A bill has been introduced that could raise the speed limit in the Lone Star State to 75 miles per hour on major roadways, and it's got a lot of people talking.

The Texas House Transportation Committee has voted with only 1 nay sayer, but legislators are divided and so are Rio Grande Valley residents.

Texas drivers are accustomed to 65 even 70 miles per hour speed limits on major roadways, but a House Bill 1353 could raise the speed limit to 75 miles per hour.

The aim of the bill is to ease congestion on major roadways.

"I think 75 miles per hour on major roadways is a good speed limit," said Fabrizio Huacuja.

But not all drivers think so.

"I would disagree with the idea," said JoAnn Buege.

Her daughter had a similar opinion.

"Keep the speed limit lower," said Denise Sharol.

Jolly Villeda said people already drive 75 miles per hour, and if the speed limit is raised, drivers will drive even faster.

"I wouldn't like it," she said.

She has three little girls, and she said she's thinking of their safety.

"Because they're not watching it, you might get hit and you're kids can get hurt as well," said Villeda.

The bill would also do away with night time speed limit.

"I think that's a good idea too because some people get confused and don't lower their speed five miles," said Huacuja. "It's better if everything is just uniform."

The transportation committee voted in favor of their version of the bill.

Now legislators will review it.

"Regardless of the outcome of that legislation, we will do whatever the legislation authorizes us to do," said Amy Rodriguez with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT).

TxDOT and Texas drivers will just have to wait and see if this bill becomes a law.

If passed, the new law would go in effect September 1.
