Lamar Smith from McAllen is an accomplished rattler, and as he tickles the antlers together he scans the brush for movement.

You never know what to expect when you hit antlers together, but by simulating a battle you hope to attract a buck looking for a doe or spoiling for a fight.

At first glance, all we can see are antlers above the tall grass. A buck swivels his head and peers intently at a doe concealed in the thick grass. When she walks away he follows, and they vanish in the brush.

The first buck to emerge from the brush couldn't be much smaller. He has two little button antlers that just barely protrude from the top of his head.

As this buck emerges from the brush and cautiously moves out into the open, his massive antlers are in peak velvet.
Every year whitetail deer shed their antlers in the spring and as increasing daylight triggers hormonal changes new ones begin to grow.
