Travelers worried about security on Mexican highways now have another option when traveling between Brownsville and Monterrey.

Starting July 15th, AeroMexico will begin non-stop jet service between Monterrey and the Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport.

The trip from Monterrey to Brownsville takes four to five hours by car across highways with checkpoints by soldiers and drug cartel gunmen.

But the trip takes less than an hour by plane with no checkpoints other than customs.

Tickets went on sale Thursday at travel agencies and on AeroMexico's website.

“The announcement follows years of working with AeroMexico to convince Mexico’s oldest and largest airline of the need for service and its potential profitability” said Brownsville’s Director of Aviation Larry A. Brown.

According to Brown, the airline will offer seasonal weekend service and later look at expanding the number of flights.

“We are very excited about this new service and will be watching its performance with great expectations” said Aidee Reyes, AeroMexico’s Route Planning Coordinator.

AeroMexico has one of the most modern fleet of aircraft in the world and will use 50-passenger, one class service jets on the Monterrey-Brownsville route.

Ticket prices are as low as $136 one way and can be purchased on the Airport’s web site www.flybrownsville.com

AeroMexico joins Continental, United, and American Airlines in serving the regions first airport.
