The Cameron County Sheriff's Department has installed GPS systems in over 100 of their patrol vehicles.

Sheriff Omar Lucio said the "mobile-links" software can track patrol units anywhere they go through the more than 1,200 square miles in the county.

Dispatchers will be able to see exactly where a patrol unit is located, where it's headed and how fast an officer is driving.

The sheriff said it's a safety tool for both the community and deputies.

The system costs a total of $378,000 and was purchased through a state grant.
