On  Tuesday, Feb. 19, the Marine Military Academy in Harlingen will be celebrating the service of those who served in the Battle of Iwo Jima.

This year will mark the 68th anniversary of the battle when U.S. Marines stormed the tiny Pacific island and were surprised to find Japanese soldiers.

Andi Atkinson and Cadet Cody Hubbard explained the details of the battle and what you can expect from the parade.

The Rio Grande valley is one of two locations to honorably display a monument of Marines raising the American flag on top of Mount Suribachi.

The image was captured by photographer, Joe Rosenthal, and it captures five Marines and one Navy Corpsman raising the American flag.

Since 1982, MMA has been home to the historic treasure known as the Iwo Jima Monument.

The Valley also has a direct connection to the monument. Corporal Harlon Block of Weslaco was one of the Marines to erect the flag on that day.

The parade will begin at 4 p.m. and it is open to the public.
