Harlingen education leaders calling on the business community to support public education.

The Texas chapter of the non-profit organization Raise Your Hand will gather about 100 business leaders on Monday to discuss the impact of public education on economic development.

Harlingen School Board Vice-President George McShan told Action 4 News that the community needs to invest in the future now more than ever, given the recent $5.6 billion dollar cuts in education.

He adds students need to be prepared in order to fill the demand for high-skilled jobs.

"We know the medical school is coming here to the Rio Grande Valley, but who will supply those students to the medical school?” McShan said. “The people right here in the (Valley). That's why he have to invest in our students so they'll have the skills, creativity and the genius to become the physicians of tomorrow and the health career professionals that we are looking for."
