Although cockroaches are universally despised, some homeowners want to avoid the use of insecticides while attempting to eliminate infestations. Luckily, there are ways to combat these invaders without resorting to chemicals.

Don’t create conditions that invite pests into your home. Poorly stored food and stray crumbs can attract ants, roaches, and mice. Keep your food stored in airtight containers. Wipe down counters, tables, etc., and sweep the floor frequently.

Provide physical barriers. Properly installed screens on windows and doors will help block unwanted insects from entering your home.

Buy a gecko. When not acting as a spokesperson for a national insurance company, the gecko is a natural predator of cockroaches of all varieties. Geckos will work inconspicuously to eradicate a cockroach infestation. However, you must be prepared to end up with a pet gecko once it has solved your problem.

Set out a mixture of baking soda and sugar. Cockroaches have highly acidic digestive systems. Once ingested, the baking soda reacts adversely with the cockroaches’ body chemistry, resulting in death.

Try boric acid. Boric acid isn't non-toxic, but it’s less volatile than most insecticides and safe to humans with normal use. Boric acid can purchased as a powder from any home improvement store. Sprinkle or place containers of boric acid behind the refrigerator and stove, in the backs of cupboards and shelves, and other areas where you suspect roaches are congregating.

Try some other ideas. Besides the above mentioned natural roach control methods, you might try spreading diatomaceous earth, using Epsom salt as poisonous bait, and placing bay leaves in cupboards and pantries as a repellent.

In short, there are many natural, safe options for eliminating pests. However, don't forget that cockroaches are nature's ultimate survivors. High potency chemicals, let alone home remedies, can often come up short. If all else fails, call the experts at Esparza Pest Control. With over 46 years of experience, we are supremely qualified to handle your every pest control need.
