According to the National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse, there are over 25.8 million people living with diabetes in the United States.

Diabetes is a disease in which blood glucose, or sugar levels are too high. Glucose comes from the foods you eat. Insulin is a hormone that helps glucose get into cells to provide energy.

With Type 1 Diabetes, one’s body does not produce insulin. Type 1 Diabetes is usually diagnosed in children or young adults

With Type 2 Diabetes, the most common type of diabetes, one’s body does not produce enough insulin or cells ignore the insulin that is produced.

Women can also acquire a form of diabetes while pregnant called gestational diabetes.

Over time, having too much glucose in your blood can cause serious health problems such as eye, kidney, and nerve damage.

Diabetes can also cause heart disease, stroke and even the need for limb amputation.

Symptoms

Symptoms of Type 2 diabetes may include:

• Fatigue
• Thirst
• Weight Loss
• Blurred Vision
• Frequent Urination

People who have no symptoms can be diagnosed with a proper blood test.

There is currently no cure for diabetes and it is important to remember that being diagnosed with diabetes is not a death sentence.

Exercise, diet, weight control, monitoring glucose levels, and taking prescribed medicine can help control diabetes so you can live a full, normal life.

Two of the most powerful resources you can offer a loved one living with diabetes are awareness and support.
