First Annual Brownsville Financial Literacy Fair
The Community Development Corporation of Brownsville is working with the Neighbors In Need of Services Head Start Center, United Brownsville, and IBC Bank to host Brownsville’s First Financial Education Summit on Thursday October 18th from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm at the Brownsville Event Center. The summit is an all day event where visitors can come and go as they please. The event was made open to the public and free of charge and was placed in an easy to access location in order to increase attendance. During the summit trainings will cover the basics of credit, budgeting, and money management. Additionally their will also be information on useful financial tools, services, and products for attendees. The collaboration between local nonprofits and IBC Bank will increase the average financial literacy of Valley residents in order to build individual economic knowledge. IBC trainers will work with NINOS staff, giving them training in distilling the knowledge into easily comprehendible information. In return the NINOS staff will work with both attendees at the Financial Education Summit as well as their own clients who spend time with them throughout the year.“This kind of collaboration is great for the community” says Ms. Gloria Casas, the CDCB coordinator for the event. “Working together banks and nonprofits can both specialize in what they are best at and benefit the community.”“Financial education is an important tool in building strong communities, and banks know this, and they’re very good at giving that information out. The problem is the people who need this knowledge aren’t going to banks. That’s why we’ve decided to work together, the banks can train us in the best ways to teach this information, and in turn we can get that information to their target audience. It’s a win-win.”The Community Development Corporation of Brownsville is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit Community Housing Development Organization in Brownsville Texas. CDCB provides a full cycle of affordable housing services including rental properties, an in house real estate agent, down payment assistance, below market rate mortgages, and quality construction.
