All the talk was about the Apple CEO's Steve Jobs unveiling the new iPad, yesterday.
Many geeks are salivating over the new gadget that takes aim at the gap between laptops and smart phones. Many folks are wondering what it is and why it was necessary to create.
The aforementioned gap between laptops and smart phones has a number of gadgets that attempt to give you the best of portability and computing power.
It may very well be that Apple has done it again with a game-changing device that targets the realm of netbooks.
In all practicality, the iPad (which could have a better name), is a giant iPhone, with a few additions.
The large screen size allows for drawing applications, easier text reading, and a bigger on-screen keyboard that is easier to use.
This actually makes the addition of some applications possible that were not adequate for the tiny iPhone screen.
For example, it does have productivity sofware so that you can work on a document or spreadsheet.
The iPad also includes some standard features, like connecting to the Internet via WiFi or an optional 3G service by AT&T. Email, web browsing, and games.
The iPad works very well as a reader, similar to the Kindle by Amazon. As a matter of fact, the iPad can download Kindle books, which are easier to read on the iPad than on the iPhone.
It combines all the benefits of the iPhone with the usefulness of a basic computer.
There are those who are not impressed by the new Apple device, however. Criticisms include the fact that the solid state hard drive can only contain a few types of files.
You could not, for example, use the iPad as a portable drive.
If you are considering the purchase of an iPad, do not buy one if you do not have a computer. You are going to want to print files or need to install software at some point.
The iPad is great to have in addition to your computer, not instead of a computer.
The iPad definitely offers a great deal more versatility than the iPhone because of the extra screen space.
However, it does not give you the full benefit that a full-size computer offers in terms of the number of applications available, computing power, and peripherals you can attach.
These are some things you should keep in mind if you are interested in buying the iPad.
Prices start at $499 for the base model and go up to just under $900 for the top of the line.
