Martha Benavides

Hometown: Harlingen, TX

My interest in broadcast journalism began at a really young age. I suppose I followed in my father's footsteps. At one time he hosted a Spanish entertainment program on KGBT.

I grew up in Harlingen and everytime my family and I would drive by the KGBT studios I would tell them "I'm going to work there someday."

My dream came true after graduating from high school. I started as a sales assistant and slowly worked my way into the news department.

I started as a reporter and have anchored most of the newscasts at one time or another.

Getting involved in the community is really important to me because it gives us a chance to stay in touch with all the people of the Rio Grande Valley.

In my spare time I enjoy taking part in community events like the Walk to Fight Asthma, Relay 4 Life, the Diabetes Association of South Texas. I also help the Arc Of Texas, the Valley Aids Council and the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Visits to our Valley school districts also keep me busy during National Children's Book Reading Week and career days.

Aside from my family, singing is my other love and I enjoy performing at events around the Valley.
